Authorize your computer using iTunes

When you authorize your Mac or PC, you’re giving it permission to access your apps, audiobooks, books, music, movies, and other content. You need to authorize your computer before you can use it to sync or play content that you downloaded from the iTunes Store.

You can authorize up to 5 computers, which means you can play your content on 5 different computers. To authorize your computer, you need to have access to it. You can't authorize a computer using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

How do I know how many computers are authorized?

If you authorized more than 2 computers, you can see how many are authorized.
Open your account in iTunes and sign in with your Apple ID. (Or open iTunes, click Store > Sign In, and enter your Apple ID and password.) In the Apple ID Summary section, you’ll see the number of computers that you’ve authorized with your Apple ID. You can’t see the names of those computers.

Do I need to authorize my iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch?

You don’t need to authorize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but you do need to associate your iOS devices with your Apple ID. Your iOS devices don’t use your available authorizations.

How do I authorize a computer?

  1. Open iTunes on the computer you want to authorize.
  2. Choose Store > Authorize This Computer from the menu bar.
You might need to show the menu bar to see this option in Windows. In earlier versions of iTunes, you can access this option from the Advanced menu.
    Select Authorize This Computer
  3. Enter your Apple ID and click Authorize.
If your Apple ID uses an expired MobileMe account, you can still use it to authorize your computer.
If iTunes asks you to authorize your computer again, it won't use a new authorization. iTunes uses the same authorization for the same computer.

I tried to authorize my computer, but I’m out of authorizations. What happened?

If you didn’t deauthorize your computer before reinstalling Windows or upgrading your RAM, hard disk, or other system components, your computer might be using multiple authorizations. Try deauthorizing your computer a few times until it’s no longer authorized. Then authorize your computer again, and it will use only one authorization.

  • iTunes keeps asking me to authorize when I try to play my content.
  • I need to deauthorize a computer or deauthorize all computers.......

    Deauthorize your computer using iTunes

Make sure you deauthorize your Mac or PC before you sell it, give it away, send it in for service, or make major updates. If your computer isn’t working or you don’t have it anymore, you can still deauthorize it using the steps below.

You can deauthorize a single computer as long as you have access to it. If you want to deauthorize a computer that you don't have anymore, you'll need to deauthorize all computers. But you have to sign in to iTunes using a computer—you can't use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to deauthorize any computers.

    Deauthorize one computer

When you deauthorize a computer, you’re removing the ability to play content that you bought from iTunes. You won’t lose your content, and nothing will be deleted. And it’s easy to authorize your computer again later—just follow the steps to authorize a Mac or PC.
To see how many computers are authorized, open your account in iTunes and sign in with your Apple ID. (Or open iTunes, click Store > Sign In, and enter your Apple ID and password.) In the Apple ID Summary section, you’ll see the number of computers that you’ve authorized with your Apple ID. You can’t see the names of those computers.

Why do I need to deauthorize my computer?

To make sure it’s not using one of your available authorizations. You should deauthorize your computer before you do any of these:
    • Sell it or give it away
    • Send it in for service
    • Make major upgrades

My computer doesn't work anymore. Can I deauthorize it?

You can't deauthorize a single computer if you don't have it or can't use it. Instead, you need to deauthorize all computers and then reauthorize the ones you're still using.

How do I deauthorize this computer?

    1. Open iTunes on the computer you want to deauthorize.
    2. Choose Store > Deauthorize This Computer from the menu bar.
You might need to show the menu bar to see this option in Windows. In earlier versions of iTunes, you can access this option from the Advanced menu.
      Select Deauthorize This Computer
    3. Enter your Apple ID and click Deauthorize.

Do I need to deauthorize my iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch?

You don’t need to deauthorize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but you do need to disassociate your iOS devices from your Apple ID. Your iOS devices don’t use your available authorizations.

    Deauthorize all computers

If need to deauthorize your computer but you can't access it, you need to deauthorize all computers. After you authorize 2 computers, you'll have the option to deauthorize all computers for your Apple ID. You can deauthorize all computers once per year.

Why should I deauthorize all of my computers?

To make sure that only you can play your content, or to free up authorizations used by your old computers. Here's when you should deauthorize all computers:
    • Your computer doesn't work anymore
    • You sold or gave away a computer and didn't deauthorize it first

What happens when I deauthorize all computers? Will I lose my content?

Just like deauthorizing a single computer, you won't delete anything if you choose to deauthorize all computers. You just won't be able to play content that you bought from iTunes on those computers until you reauthorize them. You need to have the computer to reauthorize it.

How do I deauthorize all of my computers?

Using one of your authorized computers, follow these steps:
    1. Open your account in iTunes (you may need to sign in with your Apple ID). Or open iTunes, click Store > Sign In, and enter your Apple ID and password.
    2. Click Deauthorize All.

The Deauthorize All button appears only if you have more than 2 authorized computers. If you don't see the Deauthorize All button, that means you only have one authorized computer.

I deauthorized all of my computers. What should I do now?

Reauthorize each computer that you want to use with iTunes. Go to Store > Authorize this computer and enter your Apple ID and password.
