RUBY

The Mogok Valley in Upper Myanmar (Burma) was for centuries the world's main source for rubies. That region has produced some of the finest rubies ever mined, but in recent years very few good rubies have been found there. The very best color in Myanmar rubies is sometimes described as "pigeon's blood." In central Myanmar, the area of Mong Hsu began producing rubies during the 1990s and rapidly became the world's main ruby mining area. The most recently found ruby deposit in Myanmar is in Namya (Namyazeik) located in the northern state of Kachin.

Rubies have historically been mined in Thailand, the Pailin and Samlout District of CambodiaBurmaIndiaAfghanistan and in Pakistan. In Sri Lanka, lighter shades of rubies (often "pink sapphires") are more commonly found. After the Second World War ruby deposits were found in TanzaniaMadagascarVietnamNepalTajikistan, and Pakistan.
A few rubies have been found in the U.S. states of MontanaNorth CarolinaSouth Carolina and Wyoming. While searching for aluminous schists in Wyoming, geologistDan Hausel noted an association of vermiculite with ruby and sapphire and located six previously undocumented deposits.[8]
More recently, large ruby deposits have been found under the receding ice shelf[citation needed] of Greenland.
Republic of Macedonia is the only country in mainland Europe to have naturally occurring rubies. They can mainly be found around the city of Prilep. Macedonian ruby has a unique raspberry color.
In 2002 rubies were found in the Waseges River area of Kenya. There are reports of a large deposit of rubies found in 2009 in Mozambique, in Nanhumbir in the Cabo Delgado district of Montepuez.[9]
Spinel, another red gemstone, is sometimes found along with rubies in the same gem gravel or marble. Red spinel may be mistaken for ruby by those lacking experience with gems. However, the finest red spinels can have a value approaching that of the average ruby.[10] The color of rubies varies from vermilion to red. The most desired color is "pigeon's blood", which is pure red with a hint of blue. If the color is too pink, the stone is a pink sapphire. The same is true if it is too violet – it is a violet sapphire. The best rubies and star rubies are bright red. Most rubies come from Burma and Thailand.

125West Ruby Crystal

Available exclusively from 125West is one of the world’s largest known rough ruby gemstones. This unique single natural ruby crystal weighs 8.2 lbs. or 18,696 carats. The ruby is semi-translucent to opaque and contains rutile, which may create a six-ray star if cut en cabochon. The crystal displays a strong red fluorescence when exposed to long-wave ultraviolet light. It measures 122.4mm x 112.3mm x 133.9mm.

The ruby is identified in GIA Report 15171991 dated May 24, 2006.

If carved, the 125West Ruby Crystal gemstone would be the largest ruby carving in the world. If shaped en cabochon, it would be the largest shaped and polished ruby gemstone in the world.

About Rubies

The ruby belongs to the corundum group of minerals. Its name is derived from the red color (LatinRubeus). Red corundum is always called by the name ruby, while other colors of corundum are known as sapphire. Rubies can be opaque, translucent, or transparent. The ruby coloring pigment is chrome plus some iron. The red color and tone vary with individual deposits, so it is not possible to identify the source area. Ruby is the second-hardest mineral after diamond and seven times harder than topaz. The hardness varies in direction and has no cleavage but does have certain preferred directions of parting. Care must be taken when cutting and setting a ruby. Inclusions in a ruby are common. Rutile needles produce a soft sheen known as silk. Or if cut en cabochon, the effect is six-rayed star (asterism) produced by the reflection of a light source.

Over 200 pieces from 25 years of collecting

No, ROM is not a new CD from the former Apple CEO. We’re talking Royal Ontario Museum playing host to “Light & Stone: Gems from the Collection of Michael Scott,” an exhibition of dozens of superb pieces that explain why ROM calls it “[a]rguably the most important private collection in North America.”

The exhibition inaugurates the Gallery of Gems and Gold in the Teck Suites of Galleries: Earth’s Treasures. The museum’s press release highlights the following.
  • A 9000-carat carved quartz sculpture entitledRepose, depicting a nude male youth with a draping of 18 karat gold over his lap
  • A spectacular tiara entitled Queen of Kilimanjaro, featuring the world’s largest faceted tanzanite (242 carats) on 18 karat white gold, encircled by 803 rare tsavorite garnets and 913 brilliant-cut diamonds
  • The world’s largest faceted benitoite gem, over 15 carats. This extremely rare stone was discovered in 1907 in San Benito County, California and, as it has been found nowhere else in the world, has become that state’s official gemstone. Benitoite has the color of a blue sapphire but the fire and reflective properties of a diamond, and scientists have yet to discover what chemical properties of the gem give it its vivid hue [back to top]

New world record Pigeon's Blood Rubies discovered in Madagascar

RECORD RUBIES AND SAPPHIRES. New magnificent rubies were found in a National Park near Didy in Madagascar in May 2012. When the rough was first discovered, it was assumed to be impossible to have natural rubies in such size, clarity and color. Therefore the GRS Laboratory made an adventurous expedition to this origin. What we discovered in this national park did not only confirm the findings of the world's largest rubies, but also significant findings of GRS type "Royal Blue" sapphires of extremely large size.
