  • 4. Aung San Suu Kyi Born June 19, 1945 in Rangoon, Burma Daughter of General Aung San Attended Oxford University 1988- she returned to Burma to tend to her dying mother, and political chaos had erupted throughout the state
  • 5. National League for Democracy (NLD) “ The struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma is a struggle for life and dignity. It is a struggle that encompasses our political, social and economic aspirations. “-Aung San Suu Kyi Founded by Aung San Suu Kyi to establish democracy and freedom in Burma Won a free and fair election in 1990, but the result was never recognized Over 2,000 members of the NLD have been arrested
  • 6. Political [CAUSE] Highly oppressive policies -lack of freedom of speech -no guarantee of fair public trials -suppression of ethnic minority groups -flawed electoral laws
  • 7. Political [effects] Innocent people are killed or are forced to flee when their land is taken from them by the military Massive Protests Erupt Those who protest or go against the government in any way risk detainment, prosecution, or execution.

Economic Resource rich country Corrupt, inefficient, and oppressive military rule Causes Effects Military leaders and businesses exploit these natural resources The military benefits from this exploitation, so they do little to help the problem of a massive gap between the rich and poor Inflation Fiscal deficit Widespread poverty Dangerous working conditions
  • 9. social ★ Burma’s military regime is amongst the world’s largest human rights violators...★ The army targets ethnic minorities, including Muslims and Christians, as well as anyone that opposes them. These people are... Murdered Tortured Relocated Killed Raped Forced to Work Prosecuted
  • 10. Social [Continued] The Burmese government spends less than 1% of their budget on public health funds. The U.S. spends approximately 16% in comparison. THE RESULT? High infant mortality rate Short life expectancy Malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhea, and HIV/AIDS threaten the population
  • 11. Resolution One: Allow Aung San Suu Kyi to Leave Burma When Aung San Suu Kyi is free for short periods of time, she does not leave the country for fear of not being let back in. If permitted to leave, she could... gain worldwide support bring attention to her country make progress in creating democracy in Burma
  • 12. ☆ Resolution Two: Increase United Nations Involvement Increase United Nations Involvement Countries around the globe are devoted to Aung San Suu Kyi’s protection... What about the rest of Burma’s people?
