How to Set Up ADB and Fastboot with Android SDK on Windows 7 & Windows 8

Android SDK brings with itself the two most important tools needed for tweaking your Android phone, ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and Fastboot. Why do we need them? ADB and fastboot helps us install a custom recovery, which allows us to root our Android devices, install custom ROMs and perform many other system tweaks which are not otherwise possible.

We do so many tutorials daily on TeamAndroid.com about how to root devices, install custom firmware etc. and we always recommend you should have your USB driversproperly installed and your Android phone should be working perfectly fine with ADB and Fastboot.

Let’s get on with the tutorial on how to set up ADB and Fastboot for your Android phone so that you never have to go through USB drivers issues again when trying out a custom firmware.

How to Set Up ADB and Fastboot with Android SDK

Here are the step-by-step instructions to set up ADB / Fastboot on your computer. Follow the steps carefully and make  sure you read the tutorial once before actually performing it.

Required:

• An Android phone. We will be using a Galaxy Nexus.
• microUSB cable
• A computer

I – DOWNLOADING JAVA & ANDROID USB DRIVERS

First, we need to get Java Platform installed and then download the Android USB drivers (and some other tools) using Android SDK Manager. This is how it is to be done:

Step 1 – Download and Install Java Platform (JDK) from Java SE Software Development Kit (SDK) downloads. Once installed, proceed to the next step.

Step 2 – Download Android SDK (installer_rXX.X-windows.exe) from the Android Developers website. Preferably: Click on Other platforms and download the ZIP package file for Windows.

Step 3 – Extract the zip file anywhere in your computer. We extracted in D:\ drive. So now we have, D:\android-sdk-windows.

Step 4 – Open SDK Manager and wait till it loads (fetches) all the packages.

Step 5 – Now only select two pakcages. Check Android SDK Platform-tools and Google USB Driveroptions. Uncheck everything else as shown below. Then click on the “Install 2 packages…” button.

Step 6 – Confirm the packages that you selected. Select Accept All and click the “Install” button.

Step 7 – Wait till the downloading finishes.

Step 8 – Once you get the following screen, this means all the packages have been successfully installed.

Step 9 – If you again go to the Android SDK folder (D:\android-sdk-windows), you will see the following directories now. extras and platform-tools are the most important ones that we need.

Sony Xperia Z USB Drivers – Download Now

The popular Sony Xperia Z was first unveiled at the CES 2013, and the phone has started releasing in various countries. It is one of the most high-end Android phones by Sony with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and comes with an amazing set of features. Most of you who would have bought the phone can easily connect it with the computerusing Sony PC Companion or Bridge for Mac, but for those who can’t, we have the Sony USB drivers for Xperia Z — they are bundled with the Sony software package. PC Companion (Windows) and Bridge for Mac is a collection of tools and applications you can use when you connect your device to a computer.

Xperia Z USB drivers are the same as the other Sony Android devices. These new phones do not support mass storage anymore, but it does support MTP which allows you to add or remove files from your 16GB or 32GB of phone storage. MTP drivers are always included with the stock Android phone software — but could have been removed by Sony to include their own drivers. ADB drivers and Fastboot drivers will need to be downloaded from the Android SDK. Sony Xperia Z USB Drivers for Windows

Like we said, the USB drivers for Xperia Z are always bundled with Sony PC Companion or MTP drivers are part of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. For transferring media content, photos and other files from your phone, you need to have a micro USB cable (preferably the one you got with the phone) for the phone.

• Recommended: Download and install Sony USB drivers or PC Companion first for Xperia Z!
• Connect your Xperia Z with the computer using that USB cable.
• Now wait for the computer to recognize the device.
• Several drivers including the modem, MTP service etc. will be installed automatically.

Once finished, you will see a new media device in My Computer. You can now transfer photos, music, videos or any other files from and to your Xperia Z USB memory.

Sony Xperia Z USB Drivers for Mac

Connecting your Xperia Z USB memory on a Mac is also easy. If you have been a Nexus device user on a Mac previously, then this Xperia Z should be no different for you. Make sure you have a Xperia Z and a micro-USB data cable (preferably, the one that came with the phone). Follow these quick steps:

• Recommended: Download and install Sony USB drivers first for Xperia Z!
• Download Android File Transfer and install it on Mac OS X.
• Connect your Xperia Z with the USB cable.
• Wait for the phone to get connected and drivers to be installed.
• Android File Transfer window will automatically open up the window with your internal phone memory directories.

Sony Xperia Z ADB / Fastboot Drivers

When you have installed the flash tool for Xperia™, you can flash standard Sony software on your unlocked Xperia™ device. Note! When you flash software onto your device, your user data and content will be erased. Make sure to properly back up all information.

This is how you flash software on your phone:

1. Computer: Open Emma from the Start menu of your computer.
2. Connect a USB cable to your computer.
3. Phone: Turn off your phone.
4. Connect your phone to the USB cable while holding the flash key (for example Volume down). The flash key varies between models. For a complete key mapping, see the supported phones page.

5. Computer: Select the software you want to flash in the Service list. The tool automatically detects the phone model and lists available software versions, which are called Services in this flash tool.
6. Click on Apply Service. The phone will now be flashed.
7. Phone: When you have flashed your device, you can disconnect your phone from the computer. The first time you start your device after you have flashed it, the boot-up might take a little longer than normal.

How to Install and Use Sony Flashtool on Xperia Devices

Japanese manufacturer Sony’s Xperia line is going quite good and is being used by a number of people, the Xperia series runs on Android (that is an open source operating system), as the developments are getting fast day by day on Android,  getting the latest mods, tweaks and modify your Xperia device makes you even love it more.

Sometimes the users want to flash a new firmware in case of getting their device soft brick, or sometimes just to improve the performance. While the OTA updates take a long time to reach different regions, some of the users also look for a way to flash latest firmware on their devices before it makes a way to their devices through OTA updates. Rooting the phone is another option that allows the tinkering on device, flashing custom roms, kernels and a lot more things are there that can be flashed in an Xperia device, but wondering how? Well, Sony has a Flashtool for its Xperia line up.

Flashtool is a light software, that allows the flashing through ftf (flashtoolfirmwarefiles). It becomes handy if you are struck somewhere. In today’s tutorial we will be having a look on the detailed guide to use Flashtool.

As this is the main tutorial for Flashtool, we will be having a look on the method to flash firmware in an Xperia device.

Before we begin you need to download and install the following.

• Go ahead and download the Flashtool and install it – Download it Here: Link 2
  
• You need to install Sony drivers, get the Sony PC Companion: Download it Here.
• Mac users may download Sony Bridge: Get it Here.

Understanding & Using the Flashtool:

1. After you’ve downloaded and installed the Flashtool, you’ll get a folder named ”Flashtool” in your C: drive, or the drive which you selected while installation.
2. Here you can see the folders like Custom, Devices, Firmwares, Drivers.
3. The devices folder contains the supported devices, firmwares is the folder where you will place the .ftf file to be flashed in your phone, while the drivers folders has the Flashtool-drivers for all Xperia devices, you may install drivers through Flashtool in case you face any difficulty at the time of flashing.
4. Access the Flashtool-drivers and install Fastboot & Flashmode drivers as well first.
   
5. After the drivers have been installed, you’re good to go with Flashtool now. The first thing you need to do is, you need to download your desired file, that you are going to flash. It may be a firmware, a kernel or a root file, but it should be in .ftf format. Download the file and place it in ‘‘Firmwares” folder that is is in Flashtool folder.
   
6. Run the Flashtool.exe now, access it from the installed programs or from the same folder under drive C:.
7. In Flashtool, hit the lightening button on the top left, select whether you want to run Flashmode or Fastboot mode. Flashmode is the one you’ll need most probably while you’re trying to install an ftf file, select it and press Ok.
   
8. Select the firmware or the file that you want to flash here, and make the other selections accordingly, below is an image showing the procedure for a firmware’s ftffile. After you’ve settled it up, hit the Flash button at the bottom now, it will start loading the ftf file and show you logs. 
   
   
   
   
   
   
9. As soon as the file is loaded, you should see a pop up, prompting you to connect your device to the PC in Flashmode.
   
10. Now, turn off your device, and connect to your PC using the original data cable while keeping the Volume down key pressed. You should see the Green LED on your device. This is for flashmode, in case you want to connect your device in fastbootmode, you need to connect it while keeping the Volume Up key pressed and you should see the Blue LED now. For older Xperia devices, the back key will work for Flashmode while the menu key will work for fastboot mode.
    
    
11. After you’ve connected your device successfully, the Flashing will start, wait and sit back while the flashing gets completed. You should see the logs now, as soon as it is done the”flashing done” will appear at the bottom.
