India gang rape: 33-year-old bus driver nicknamed "Mental" said to be leader of group
A 33-year-old bus driver who was nicknamed "Mental" by friends has been said to be the leader of the six-man group accused of the horrific gang rape of a 23-year-old female student who passed away in Mount Elizabeth Hospital this morning (Dec 29).
According to a report on The Straits Times, Ram Singh, a former school dropout whose bad temper sprung the nickname, was revealed by Delhi police to be the main accused in this case.
Singh was named along with his 26-year-old brother Mukesh and four others -- 19-year-old vegetable vendor Pawan Gupta; 20-year-old gym instructor Vinay Sharma; 28-year-old bus cleaner Akshay Thakur and a 17-year-old who worked as a helper on long-distance buses.
On Dec 16, the six were believed to have been drinking before they decided to take a bus -- which had tinted windows and curtains -- out for a joyride.
The group had robbed another man of his money before picking up the student and a male companion who were both heading home after a movie.
It was then that they took turns to rape the girl and beat up her friend, before stripping the pair and dumping them on the side of a road.
Ram Singh, his brother, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta went back home after the incident and were arrested 48 hours later while the other two fled the city but got apprehanded by the police as well.
The six will face murder charges, which brings about a maximum punishment of the death penalty.
The victim was in a "critical" treatment at a Delhi hospital before the Indian cabinet acted on the professional advice of a team of doctors and flew her into Singapore, together with her father and two brothers, for treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
Her condition took a turn for the worse yesterday (Dec 28) as she suffered cardiac arrest, infections in her lungs and abdomen, "as well as significant brain injury", before succumbing to her injuries earlier today.
This incident has sparked massive outrage across India, triggering demonstrations in New Delhi which claimed the life of a police constable after things turned violent between the protestors and the authorities.
Bollywood celebrity Salman Khan also condemned the perpetrators of this incident at a press conference to promote his latest movie, and said that rapists should be sentenced to life imprisonment if not "killed".
